I’ve often found myself on the brink of giving up, overwhelmed by life’s challenges.
You see, I’m not a very resilient person… When the going gets tough, I go to sleep. This has not been a very good coping mechanism for me through the years. I have found myself lagging behind my potential.
As I’ve grown older though, I’ve slowly realized how precious time can be. I can’t just not do things when I don’t feel like it. That is why, hard as it may be, I push myself to do things even when most days I just want to give up.
It’s not easy, but I’m trying. In fact, I created this just to hold myself accountable. And as for staying motivated, here is some of the practical advice I tell myself to keep me motivated day by day.
1. Remember Your “Why”
When you’re feeling down, remind yourself why you started in the first place. Your initial reason can be a powerful motivator. Whether it’s a personal goal, a promise to someone, or a dream you’re passionate about, reconnecting with your purpose can reignite your drive. Write it down, keep it visible, and let it serve as a constant reminder.
2. Break It Down
Big goals can be daunting. Break them into smaller, manageable tasks. By focusing on one step at a time, the journey becomes less overwhelming. Celebrate small wins along the way. Each accomplishment, no matter how minor, is a step forward and can boost your confidence and motivation.
3. Visualize Success
Visualization can be a powerful tool. Close your eyes and imagine achieving your goal. Feel the emotions, see the details, and immerse yourself in that future success. This mental exercise can make your goal seem more attainable and keep you motivated to push through difficult times.
4. Surround Yourself with Positivity
The people and environment around you can significantly impact your motivation. Surround yourself with supportive and positive individuals who encourage you. Avoid negative influences that drain your energy. Sometimes, a change of scenery or a conversation with a friend can make a huge difference.
5. Take Breaks
Constantly pushing yourself without breaks can lead to burnout. It’s okay to step back and rest. Taking short breaks can rejuvenate your mind and body, making you more productive in the long run. Listen to your body and give yourself permission to relax.
6. Focus on the Present
It’s easy to have obsessive guilt over past mistakes or future worries. Instead, focus on the present moment. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep breathing exercises, can help you stay grounded and reduce stress. Concentrate on what you can do right now to move forward.
7. Set Realistic Goals
Sometimes we lose motivation because our goals are unrealistic. Re-evaluate your objectives and make sure they are achievable. Setting smaller, realistic goals can prevent feelings of failure and keep you motivated as you consistently hit your targets.
8. Learn from Failure
Failure is not the end; it’s a learning opportunity. When things don’t go as planned, reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve. Each setback is a chance to grow and become better. Embrace failures as part of your journey to success.
9. Keep a Journal
Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and progress can be therapeutic. A journal allows you to track your journey, reflect on your experiences, and see how far you’ve come. It can also help you identify patterns in your motivation and find strategies that work best for you.
10. Seek Inspiration
Inspiration can come from various sources. Read books, listen to podcasts, watch videos, or follow people who inspire you. Sometimes, hearing someone else’s story of overcoming adversity can reignite your own motivation and remind you that you’re not alone in your struggles.
11. Reward Yourself
Recognize and reward your achievements, no matter how small. Treat yourself to something enjoyable when you reach a milestone. Positive reinforcement can boost your motivation and make the journey more enjoyable.
12. Stay Flexible
Life is unpredictable, and plans can change. Stay flexible and adapt to new circumstances. Being open to change and adjusting your goals as needed can help you stay motivated even when things don’t go as planned.
13. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Physical health can impact your mental well-being. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat healthily, and exercise regularly. A healthy body supports a motivated mind. When you feel good physically, you’re more likely to stay motivated and focused on your goals.
14. Keep Perspective
Lastly, keep perspective. Remember that motivation ebbs and flows, and it’s okay to have off days. What matters is that you keep going, even if it’s just small steps. Every effort counts, and as long as you’re moving forward, you’re on the right path.
Final Thoughts
Staying motivated is easier said than done, believe me I know. But it doesn’t hurt to keep trying. Just do what you can for now, and you will see that you will slowly gain momentum— doing more than you’ve ever thought possible!
I know it’s hard, but each step counts for something. Keep on going and before you know it, you’ve finished the race. So keep at it!
